If you’ve been asking yourself, “What will marijuana-product producers think of next?”, the answer is moon rock weed. But as popular as this product is becoming, there is still some confusion as to exactly what a moon rock is and how to make one.
We’re here to clear up all the misinformation. This article will show you what moon rock weed is and how to make it.

What Moon Rock Weed Is Not
Moon rock weed—often just referred to as moon rock—is regularly confused with 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Yeah, I know. I can’t pronounce that word either. Thankfully, MDMA is more commonly known as ecstasy, so we’ll just call it that from now on.
Though ecstasy produces psychoactive effects like marijuana, the two are vastly different. Ecstasy is a methamphetamine that acts through the serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine receptors in the brain. And because ecstasy is a stimulant in the amphetamine class, it can be addictive.
Marijuana, on the other hand, acts through the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and is, for all intents and purposes, non-addictive. It’s often good to say, “moon rock weed” or “moon rock marijuana” in conversation just so everyone knows exactly what you’re talking about. Wouldn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea.
What Moon Rock Weed Is
Another misconception about moon rock weed is that it is a special strain of marijuana bred for its THC concentration. This is false. Moon rock weed is the triple combination of the following cannabis products:
- Raw, whole bud
- Honey oil (a.k.a. hash oil)
- Kief
Source: Moonrocks.com
Essentially, moon rock weed, or cannabis caviar, is a small pinch of your favorite bud covered in honey oil with a generous dusting of kief on top. The finished product looks very much like a nugget of green candy or, for those more healthfully-inclined, a Brussels sprout.
Because moon rock weed is made using three distinct forms of cannabis, each with their own degrees of potency, many are calling moon rock the strongest cannabis in the world and categorize it as the best high on Earth. But is moon rock weed really as potent as all that?
How Potent Is Moon Rock Weed?
We’re not going to kid you, moon rock weed is pretty potent…or at least it can be if you choose the right ingredients. It starts, of course, with the type of bud you use. You can choose a high-THC strain like Bruce Banner (29% THC) or you can choose a low-THC strain like Maui Wowi (13% THC). That will have a significant effect on the potency of your moon rock weed.
In addition, the potency of the honey oil you use along with the potency of the kief you use will have a profound effect on the THC percentage of the finished moon rock. On average, a typical moon rock offers 50% THC, but that already-high percentage can be pushed to almost triple digits with the right combination of ingredients.

But potency is not the end-all, be-all of moon rock weed’s appeal. Sure, it’s a big part, but the wide variety of effects this form of cannabis offers is more often the major draw. Moon rock weed can have varying effects, and varying degrees of effect, depending on a number of factors.
Chief amongst those factors is the strain used. But almost equally important is the terpene and cannabinoid concentrations present in the bud, honey oil, and kief.
Another major factor is the nigh-unmeasurable synergy between the three ingredients. Synergy is the interaction between the bud, honey oil, and kief that produces effects beyond what you could get if you took the products separately.
It can be very difficult, even with a degree in chemistry, to figure out the synergistic effects you might get when you mix bud, honey oil, and kief, so you’re best bet is just to try different combinations.
The effects can be further tweaked by including CBD products (bud, oil, or kief) in the mix instead of just THC products. So rather than just flying as high as possible (with high-THC moon rocks), you can achieve medicinal effects including reduced nausea, anti-anxiety, suppressed seizures, and many more. All that is possible with just a bit of CBD.
Let’s investigate the effects of moon rock weed in a bit more detail in the next section.
What Can You Expect From Your Moon Rock Weed?
As we mentioned in the section above, this all depends on the ingredients used to make the moon rock. Because there are three different variables (bud, oil, and kief) and because each of these can vary amongst themselves, there’s really no way to describe every single option.
Instead, we’ve reduced it all down to two main categories: THC and CBD. These cannabinoids offer different effects and benefits. So once you understand what they do, you can begin to tweak the mixture of your moon rock weed to get it exactly the way you want it. We’ll start with THC.
THC
THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol if you want to be precise, is the stuff of legend that will get you seriously messed up (high) in no time flat. That’s THC’s main claim to fame. So if you don’t want to trip the light fantastic, don’t include THC (bud, oil, or kief) in your moon rock weed.
That said, THC does offer some unique medicinal effects that you shouldn’t overlook. The medical benefits of THC include:
- Pain relief
- Eased nausea and vomiting
- PTSD treatment
- Insomnia prevention
- Increased appetite
- Enhanced senses
- Destruction of free radicals (antioxidant)
- Reduced inflammation
- Relaxed muscles
- Stopped convulsions
That’s a lot of medicinal benefits from a cannabinoid that most people think of as a recreational tool.
CBD
CBD (full name cannabidiol) is the true medicinal powerhouse of the bunch. On top of that, it won’t cause any psychoactive side-effects. So you can take CBD products without worrying that you’ll get high and lose half your day.
CBD has a long list of medicinal benefits, including:
- Bone growth
- Inhibited growth in cancer cells
- Slowed bacterial growth
- Reduced risk of artery blockage
- Psoriasis treatment
- Prevention of nervous system degeneration
- Reduced blood sugar levels
- Better sleep
- Reduced seizures and convulsions
- Suppressed muscle spasms
- Anxiety relief
- Lessened severity of psychosis
- Reduced nausea and vomiting
- Appetite stimulation
- Reduced inflammation
- Decreased pain
And that’s just for starters! Scientists continue to discover new ways to use CBD to treat both common and uncommon diseases.
Mix-And-Match
If it’s your goal to make your own moon rock weed (which we’ll discuss in the next section), you can mix and match how much THC and CBD you include in the final product.
If you want straight-up “take me to another dimension,” opt for high-THC moon rock weed. If you want the medicinal effects without losing your grip on reality, make your moon rock weed with CBD bud, oil, and kief.
Should You Make Your Own Moon Rock Weed Or Buy Already-Made?
We’ll show you how to make your own moon rock weed from start to finish below, but keep in mind that it requires three distinct ingredients. When deciding whether to make your own moon rock weed, you basically have four choices:
- Produce all the ingredients at home (assuming you can grow your own bud).
- Purchase whole bud and then make your own honey oil and kief.
- Purchase whole bud, honey oil, and kief from your local dispensary.
- Buy already-made moon rock weed from a trusted source.
It really depends on how much work you want to put into it and how much time you have to dedicate to the process. To help you answer the make-or-buy question, let’s break down the moon rock creation process from start to finish.
Grow Your Own Bud

Growing your own bud is a labor-intensive, time-consuming process. It requires a great deal of knowledge, experience, and specialized equipment to get the final product just right. Most people don’t have the time or the money necessary to really make a go of growing their own bud.
We’re not saying it can’t be done, but it’s often better just to purchase your cannabis from someone who does it full time.
Make Your Own Honey Oil
Source: Yodabbadabba.com
Honey oil, or hash oil, is typically made through a process known as solvent extraction. In solvent extraction, a chemical solvent like alcohol, carbon dioxide, or butane is forced through the cannabis material.
In the process, trichomes and other chemicals are stripped away from the plant. The solvent is then removed by evaporation or straining, leaving the THC, CBD, terpenes, flavonoids, and other goodies behind.
Butane is by far the most popular solvent used to make honey oil. It’s so popular that we often refer to the finished product as butane hash oil (BHO) to distinguish it from other extraction methods (like ice water extraction).
The problem with making your own honey oil is that the process can be dangerous. Butane is highly flammable and misusing it can result in serious injury or death. Overall, it’s just a better idea to let those with plenty of experience make the honey oil for you.
Make Your Own Kief
Source: StuffStonersLike.com
Kief, also called crystal or pollen, is a fine powder made from the trichomes (dried resin glands) found on the leaves of the cannabis plant. Kief is fairly easy to produce. It’s certainly easier than growing your own bud or making your own honey oil. All you need to collect your own kief is a grinder with a kief catcher at the bottom.
Simply place your buds in the topmost chamber and begin to grind. The chopped bud falls into the next screen down. The loose kief continues to fall through this screen to the next compartment where it can be stored. Some even put a small coin in the herb collection chamber where it can be used as an agitator to further separate the kief from the ground bud.
After you’ve finished grinding, be sure to tap the grinder against a flat surface (like the table) to force the last of the loose kief through the screen into the final compartment.
As you can see, producing the three components that go into making moon rock weed can be a bit labor intensive. Your best bet is to purchase the already-made product at your local dispensary and just enjoy the effects.
If you want a bit more control over what you consume, we suggest buying the three components from a trusted source and then cooking up your own batch of moon rock weed.
How To Make Moon Rock Weed
The process for making moon rock weed is really quite simple. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Your favorite whole bud
- Kief
- Honey oil
- Eyedropper or small brush
- Tweezers
First, break off a small piece of bud from the larger whole. Holding this piece and manipulating it with the tweezers makes the whole process easier. Next, cover the piece of bud with honey oil using the eyedropper or small brush.
Make sure you cover the whole piece of bud but don’t saturate it. Finally, roll the oil-covered bud in kief until it’s completely coated.

Repeat this process with all your bud, honey oil, and kief. Let the nuggets dry thoroughly before using. That’s it. Just three simple steps to making a completely new cannabis experience. And when you think about it, the combinations you can create are literally endless.
But how do you use moon rock weed once the nuggets are all dry? We’ll answer that question in the next section.
How To Use Moon Rock Weed
Put simply, moon rock weed is smoked just like most other cannabis products. You can smoke moon rock weed in a joint, hash bowl, pipe, bubbler, or bong. Just break the moon rock weed into small pieces and wrap them in your favorite rolling paper or put them in the bowl of your bong. Add fire (a.k.a. decarboxylation) and let the fun begin. It’s as simple as that.
If that explanation wasn’t enough, here’s more detail on two of the most common methods to help you on your way.
Put A Little Rock In Your Roll
One of the easiest, most familiar, and most accessible methods of shooting the moon is to roll a bit of the rock into a joint, blunt, or spliff.
This works well if you’re rolling your own product, but, with a little effort, you can also add wax to pre-rolled blunts and joints.
If you’re rolling a joint or blunt (or even a cross joint) from scratch, break up a nug of moon rock weed and sprinkle some of the smaller pieces down the length of your joint before closing.
If you’ve purchased a product from a local dispensary and want to add an out-of-this-world kick to the mix, you’ll have to deconstruct the joint, blunt, or spliff, add the crushed moon rock, and then reroll everything together in order to smoke it.
It’s kind of a pain to do this because you first have to deconstruct the product before reconstructing it.
But adding rock to a pre-rolled joint, blunt, or spliff is sometimes quicker and less stressful because you can rely on the “memory” of the wrapper to roll up much quicker instead of struggling again and again to form the flat sheet into something resembling a tube.
Bong The Moon
Depending on how it is, a single sphere of moon rock weed will probably be too large to fit in the bowl of your bong. Never fear. You can still bong the moon without too much effort.
The simplest way is to break the rock into small pieces that do fit into the bowl. Then, you can just press a single piece into place, put your mouth on the bong, flick a BIC, and take a deep breath in.
But what do you do if the pieces of moon rock weed are too small and will slide through the downstem into the base? Toss them out? Heavens, no! Smoke them some other way? Sure, that’s also an option.
If you want to keep using your bong to finish off those tiny pieces of moon rock weed, read on for instructions.
- Find one or two nugs or raw bud in your stash (or break them off a larger bud) that are slightly larger than the diameter of the downstem and insert them into the bottom of the bowl.
- Add a few of the small pieces of moon rock weed on top.
- Gather another nugget of marijuana from your stash, remove any seeds and stems and, while holding it over the bowl, rip it into small pieces with your fingers. The finer you make it the easier it is to pack in the bowl and the better it will burn. Alternatively, you can use a grinder to shred your cannabis before packing it on top of your solid pieces.
- Fill the bowl the rest of the way with shredded marijuana.
- Don’t pack to tight or it will hinder the burn and restrict smoke flow.
- Light up and puff yourself away.
When you pack the bowl with moon rock in the middle, you create an oven-like effect where the outer space nugget vaporizes thanks to the burning ganja around it (e.g., at lower temperatures) rather than direct
These lower temperatures preserve a larger percentage of the cannabinoids, allowing you to inhale more of the good stuff with a single breath.
You may have to light the same bowl a couple of times to use up all the cannabis therein, but, hey, that’s the fun of it, right? This is also very useful if you’re passing the bong back and forth among friends. You’ll get more mileage with less effort.
The Secret To The Best Moon Rock Weed
Contrary to popular belief, the secret to the best moon rock weed isn’t the strain or strains you choose for your ingredients.
The real secret is the quality and purity of the cannabis you start with.
Yes, different strains do produce different effects. As a general rule, sativas provide a pleasant brain buzz, while indicas elicit a relaxed body high.
That’s why we encourage you to experiment with the strain (or combination of strains) you use in your moon rock weed.
You can opt for one of the strongest weed strains (with lots of THC) or try a high-CBD/low-THC hybrid to see how that hits you. It all depends on your tastes, your experience, and the results you’re looking for.
Regardless of the strain you choose, though, always opt for the highest-quality bud you can afford. Low-quality bud, such as mids and regs, will produce a low-quality final product.
That low-quality final product will diminish any of the beneficial effects you hope to experience to the point that you might swear off moon rock weed forever — and we wouldn’t want that!
When you mix up a batch of moon rock weed, or any DIY cannabis recipe for that matter, always use the best bud you can get your hands on — the strain doesn’t matter — so that the end result doesn’t leave you dissatisfied and downhearted.
Plus, with a high-quality, organic strain like those grown at Honest Marijuana, you’ll need less moon rock weed to experience the effects you’re after. A little rock made with high-quality bud goes a long way.
Talk to the budtenders at your local dispensary to find out what strains they recommend for your needs.
